Oh! My! Goodness! It's been almost the entire year since I wrote a blog post! I've got to get better at this haha. Grab a beverage of choice; this is going to be a bit of a long one. I've had a crazy, wonderful year...some great trips, some wonderful photography opportunities and some amazing down time with my family. I started out the year with a 8700 km road trip through the U.S and into the northern part of the Baja Peninsula. It was so good and nothing like I was expecting...more on that in the next blog post. So, after that epic road trip ( and realizing we have been missing the adventure that comes with such a trip), we mulled over ideas for something to do in the spring. We threw around several ideas; another road trip, maybe fly somewhere...we were open to pretty much anything. A few days later, I had an ad for a cruise pop up on my FB feed. Now, just to clarify, Kevin doesn't like crowds or buffets or being contained. But, if you choose well, you can go somewhere cool without having to doing all the planning and such. And just like that, Alaska by cruise ship was born. ![]() We chose 3 ports of call and an all day cruise up the Endicott Arm. The ports were cute little towns that offered trinkets and diamonds on every corner. In Ketchikan we wandered the lovely little streets and took in the views of bay. We chose an excursion for the other 2 that got us outside of town and into nature. Nugget Falls, north of Juneau was a highlight! A massive waterfall plunging into Mendenhall lake with views of Mendenhall Glacier in the background. ![]() A trip out to Lower Reid Falls, north of Skagway was fun on pedal-assist bikes.(I need one of them!) ..it's quite the feeling to pedal up the side of a mountain doing almost the same speed as when you're on flat ground! As beautiful and fun as all the little trips were, NOTHING compared to sailing up the Endicott Arm! This was, by far, the most spectacular part of the entire trip. We woke up to rain and limited visibility but that couldn't dampen our spirits! We spent the morning watching the landscape go by huddled under blankets and sipping coffee from our verandah. As we approached Dawes Glacier, we headed up to the top deck. The low fog and cloud made viewing the glacier difficult but views on either side of the fjord were spectacular! Watching the low cloud and fog roll over the landscape was mesmerizing. ![]() Let the fog tell it's story.... This day spent sailing up this remote fjord stirred something in me... The simple beauty in that foggy, misty day is imprinted on my soul forever. Never say never. Cruising is not for everyone and not something we would consider for a vacation. But this cruise took us somewhere that would be very difficult to see on our own. I call that a win! I have created a series with these images and other from this trip, as well as from other atmospheric days since that I am calling "Islands in the Sky". Watch for them to be released on my website soon. Thanks for listening, cheers. |
